IN God's world, rights and duties everywhere balance. Fathers have duties to children and children to parents. Teachers and pupils, producers and consumers, church and state, citizens and their cities, all have duties involved in their rights. In every relationship among men, fullest happiness and perfection are found only as both parties meet their mutual obligations and thus merit their mutual rights. How inclined we are to belittle our own duties and to stress the duties of others: to exalt our rights and to ignore their rights! Our divorce courts and other courts, our prisons and our penitentiaries, are filled because husbands and wives and buyers and sellers and thieves and profiteers ignored their duties. Were we all as ready to recognize our obligations as to count our expectations, as anxious to meet our responsibilities as to secure our privileges, the world would be transformed. The Golden Rule, the second great commandment, and the missionary commission, are simply Christ's ways of teaching that we have duties to face and perform if we expect to share in God's promised blessings. Repentance must precede forgiveness. Restitution must precede full salvation to-day as in the case of Zaccheus. It is only the fervent prayer of a righteous man that really availeth much.
